Sustainability goals – what we accomplished in 2018 and what we want to achieve in 2019

April 5, 2019

In 2018, Elos Medtech reduced our energy consumption from non-renewable resources, rolled out the new Code of Conduct and published our first sustainability report. This blog article will give you an insight into what we set out to do in 2018, what we actually did, and what we want to accomplish in 2019.

What were our sustainability goals for 2018?

2018 was an important year for Elos Medtech’s sustainability work. Our goal was to increase our sustainability focus within our operations, incorporate sustainability in our business strategy as well as anchor our sustainability agenda in all parts of the company.

In 2018, we aimed to:

  • Implement a program for measuring and monitoring customer expectations and satisfaction.
  • Secure sustainable investments corresponding to at least 5 percent of the agreed investment budget.
  • Carry through the Employee Engagement program throughout the whole organization.
  • Reduce the energy consumption from non-renewable resources and convert to renewable energy resources where possible. The goal was a 5% increase in renewable energy sources compared to 2017.
  • Reduce scrap cost by at least 20% compared to 2017
  • Roll out Code of Conduct through local training sessions, with 100% employee participation

So, did we deliver?

As a company operating on the global market, we must take responsibility for everything that we do and leave behind to future generations. Looking back, not only did we meet our goals for 2018, but we are also proud to say that 7% of our total investments were spent on improving our environmental performance. In addition, we reduced our energy consumption from non-renewable resources, which means that 60% of all the energy we used was renewable.

Below are a few more sustainability highlights:

  • We launched our new Code of Conduct through a series of company-wide workshops involving all employees
  • All employees have undergone training in compliance and our values
  • Out of 572 employees, 40% are women
  • We launched Elos Medtech Intranet, which aims to increase the transparency and information flow throughout the whole organization
  • We put great effort into anchoring our vision, mission, and values. To investigate engagement and commitment, we conducted an employee survey which will be run yearly
  • We successfully implemented a new program to measure customer expectations and satisfaction
  • We managed to reduce scrap cost for the group with more than 20%, compared to last year. Especially successful results were presented by our Business Centre in Tianjin with a 50% decrease in scrap cost

“Sustainability is an important part of our business strategy. In 2018, we published our first sustainability report and we also launched a sustainability agenda with our three focus areas: Care for our Business, Care for our People and Care for our Responsibilities. In these focus areas, we set specific sustainability goals which we worked actively to meet in 2018”, says Jan Wahlström, CEO at Elos Medtech.

Elos Medtech’s sustainability ambitions for 2019

Although we are proud of our accomplishments in 2018, we will not settle. Instead, we will strive to be even better and continue improving our sustainability work. Our ambitions for 2019 are to:

  • Inform all critical suppliers about our Code of Conduct.
  • Secure sustainable investments corresponding to at least 5% of the agreed investment budget.
  • Increase the response rate to 80% in the Employee Engagement Survey.
  • Up to 10 employees will be given the opportunity to spend a minimum of 1 month on another site/country.
  • Investigate possible ways of reducing the energy consumption in relative numbers e.g. by installing electricity meters, performing energy audits or similar. The goal is to further increase awareness, identify possible sources for improvement and seek to use renewable energy where it is possible.
  • Achieve a scrap rate of less than 5% during 2019.

Transforming medical technology and advancing quality of life worldwide

Developing and manufacturing medical devices that impact human health comes with great responsibility. Patients put their trust in the tools used to treat them, and the creators of those tools put their trust in us. Earning and keeping that trust means focusing on what we do better than anyone else. Aside from creating state-of-the-art equipment, capabilities, and processes in the medtech industry, it is also our responsibility to reduce our ecological footprint. We are committed to contributing to sustainable development within medical technology. We would love for you to join us on our journey!
